Free TelfairLife International Music Festival set for Oct. 3
A free, family friendly music festival as diverse as Houston is coming up this fall at the Telfair community in Sugar Land.
The TelfairLife International Music Festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Telfair, located at U.S. 59 and University Blvd., just south of Highway 6.
The festival takes place alongside grand opening festivities for the new Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, with the stage located next to the historic building that is the museum’s new home in Telfair. Spectators are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the free lineup of music, dancing and entertainment.
Reflecting the international flavor of Telfair – not to mention Sugar Land and Houston – the festival program includes:
- Kid’s Hour, 11:30-12:30 p.m. Featuring FLY Kids, an exciting multi-cultural dance crew, and STIX, a high-energy percussion ensemble that uses oilcans, buckets, trashcans and objects from the audience to create rhythmic beats.
- Asian Hour, 1-2 p.m. Lee’s Golden Dragon Dance Troupe combines martial arts, theater and acrobatics, set to the rhythm of live music. The dance is said to bring good luck to spectators while demonstrating age-old lessons in perseverance, teamwork and respect.
- American Country & Rock Hour, 2:30-3:30 p.m. The Spiffingtons, a five-piece band, will play from their repertoire of over 250 rock, country, Motown, pop and R&B favorites.
- Indian Hour, 4-5 p.m. The Bollywood Masala troupe will sing and dance their way through an hour of upbeat music made unforgettable by hit films such as “Slumdog Millionaire.”
For kids, face painting and other activities will be offered for a nominal charge, and festival-goers will be able to purchase international food and drinks from selected vendors. Bottled water will be sold by Sugar Land’s own Living Water International, with proceeds benefitting efforts to provide clean drinking water in developing countries.
Free parking will be available at the University of Houston Sugar Land, located across U.S. 59 from Telfair, with free shuttles sponsored by Premier Dental. To reach the parking, take U.S. 59 South to University Blvd. and turn left.
